Official Climate Action Business Association Statement
Rex Tillerson’s vested interest in the fossil fuel industry, in addition to his strong ties to Russia, make him an inappropriate and potentially dangerous nominee for Secretary of State. Despite his acknowledgement of the reality of climate change and his 2009 endorsement of a carbon tax, Tillerson’s longtime position as CEO of ExxonMobil is worrisome and merits fierce opposition to his nomination. His company’s ongoing battle with Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey and refusal to concede Exxon’s role in misleading the public on climate science is further evidence that he will prevent progress on climate as Secretary of State.
Climate Action Business Association supports both the investigation into his company and an in-depth, critical confirmation process to determine his fitness for Secretary of State. We will continue our work organizing small businesses to take targeted action on climate, and encourage our base to use their powerful voices as business leaders to speak out against Tillerson and the political rise of fossil fuel corporations.
